Colour Changing Milk

Aim
We want to find out…
How will different types of milk react to dish washing liquid?
Hypothesis
I think it will mix when you put dish washing liquid because I was doing the dishes and a plate had colour and when I put wash liquid in it, it blasted.
Equipment
What we need
  • 2 Dinner plates
  • Whole Milk
  • Trim Milk
  • Sticky Labels
  • Food colouring (Red, Yellow, Blue, Green)
  • Dish washing liquid
  • Cotton Buds
Method
What we will do
  1. Label the two different plates, one as standard, one as Trim
  2. Pour milk onto each plate so the bottom is completely covered. Allow the milk to settle.
  3. Gently squeeze a tiny drop of each food colouring into the middle of the plate. Make sure the drops are close together.
  4. Touch the tip of a cotton bud into the center of the colours. What happened?
  5. Put some dish washing liquid on the other end of the cotton bud.
  6. Place the soapy end into the middle of the milk and hold it there for 10 to 15 seconds. Look what happens!
  7. Add another drop of soap to the tip and try it again and at different places in the milk.
Results
When the cotton bud with the dish washing liquid touched the milk, the colours moved away quickly and then swirled around and mixed together.
The whole milk worked faster than the trim milk. It moved away but it didn’t seem to swirl as much.
Conclusion
What we found out
That soap gets rid of fat.The trim milk has less fat than the whole milk.
Science Idea
What is the scientific thinking?
The milk has fat in it and soap grabs on to it and it tries to get rid of the fat then it blasts around the milk in the plate.
The dish soap does not mix with the milk. Instead it floats on top and spreads over the surface. As it spreads, it grabs the food colouring. Soap is a "egreaser" so the molecules in it are attacking the fat in the milk, causing motion which creates the swirling of the colours.

This week in cameo writing we have focused on personification. This is when you make something that is not real, come alive!



Stuffed Toy

Stuffed toy, you lay there carelessly with not a care in the world.
I don't know how you do it with your eyes closed at day, party body at night.
You get smaller everyday with stuff oozing out of your abdomen.
Your frightening bold, black eyes staring at me every morning.
You become invisible as the other soft toys bury you.

I don't know how you do it and I guess you just are on a roll with life.
You get shorter each day as people try to get the point.
You pointed because people are just using you and you're sick of it.
As you write you get sadder and sadder because your life's running out.

Science Experiment

           Fizzing and Foaming
Aim

We want to find out which liquids are acid,we know that when we combine baking soda with vinegar we get a fizzing  and foaming reaction. Our teacher told us that baking soda is a carbonate and vinegar is an acid.
Hypothesis
I think…
lemon juice - fizz
tomato - juice nothing
milk - foam
water - nothing
tea - nothing
grape - foam
Equipment
What we need
  • baking soda
  • 6 small containers
  • 3 teaspoons the same size
  • tomato juice
  • lemon juice
  • grape juice
  • tea
  • water
  • milk
Method
What we will do
  1. Put in 1 level teaspoon into each of the 6 containers.
  2. Add exactly the same amount of liquid to each of the containers.
  3. Observe carefully to see if there are any changes, smells,bubbles or sounds.
Results
The lemon juice did fizz with the baking soda, the tomato foamed a little, the grape juice foamed, the tea did nothing and so did the milk and water.
Conclusion
What Farah, Manish, Aryan and me  found out is that when you mix all of them together after they were mixed they don’t fizz or foam.
Science Idea

Baking soda, also known as bicarbonate of soda, is a chemical compound made of sodium, hydrogen, carbon and oxygen. It is an alkaline substance that is similar to a salt and it reacts to acidic substances, including most liquids. The reaction gives off carbon dioxide gas. It exists naturally in bile and neutralizes stomach acids. Baking soda is often used in baking, personal cleansers and science projects because of its ability to react chemically with acids.

Bubbling Lava Lamp

This term we are doing scientific investigations looking at 'Cause and Effect'. Our first experiment this week was to make a bubbling lava lamp.






























Aim
We want to find out if oil, water, and aspirin make a bubbling lava lamp.
Hypothesis
I think that the aspirin in the water will bubble then the food colouring will colour the water red.
Equipment
A bottle
Vegetable Oil
Aspirin
Water
Method
1)Fill the bottle ¾ full with vegetable oil.
2)Fill the rest of the bottle but make sure it doesn’t overflow with water.
3)Add the food colouring in to make the bubbles a colour so you can see the bubbles.
4)Put the chopped up aspirins in and wait till it starts to bubble.
Results
What happened was that the aspirins made the bubbles and since that the food colour sank to the bottom it made the bubbles the colour that the food colouring was.
Conclusion
What we found out that you need quite strong aspirins to make the lava lamp bubble.
I thought that the 1st aspirins weren’t strong enough and I was right.
Science Idea
The scientific reason for this experiment was seeing what happened when you mixed oil and water together in the same bowl/bottle.And the reason why the oil and water didn’t mix is because they have different densities.Oil is less dense than water so it sits on top of it.

Cameo Writing

Welcome back to Term 3!
This term we are going to be working on descriptive writing by using models of great writing and then changing parts of the writing to put our own images and descriptions to a similar theme. This is called 'Cameo Writing'.
Today we read a text called 'My Yellow World'.



Then we chose our favourite colour and did our own piece of descriptive writing. This is what Manish came up with. 

My Red World!

I live in a red mansion and have butlers with red suits.The place is so red that people call it a blood mansion with even a blood rooftop.I even have red underpants and have red trousers - actually  I wear all red and have strawberry onesies and slippers.My favourite thing to do in red world is swimming. I have my own blood  red pool with blood  red chlorine.I even have a rose and other red flowers  in my garden with a beaming red bright light.I eat red melted pizza with a ham and cheese topping with blood  red juice.In red world there is so much red - it reminds me of red berries.I have 2000 cars with roses printed all over them.I have red grass in my patio and red grass with a huge space for a water fountain and to play red sports and cricket and more sport games.
I love my red world because it is so red like my favourite superhero  ‘The Flash’. Maybe if  I wear more red clothes  I will become the fastest man alive.
